Hokkaido Touring Day 4: Tunnel, Tunnel, Tunnel

English | 日本語
I woke up at 6:30 am and it was raining outside as forecast. Actually, I was a little worried because it is the first time to use my tent in rainy condition, but it looks work fine. Even though it's a super-cheap Chinese tent, NatureHike is still branding their products quality. I think it maybe ok.
Since it was raining, I cooked a breakfast (salted ramen noodles with yesterday's leftover vegetables) and ate at a covered barbecue area. After that, I packed up and left at around 8 am with rain gear on. I moved to south until yesterday, but from today I'll move to north which means I finally have a tailwind ! I feel the speed groove is still different from yesterday.
On today's route, I heard there are many more tunnels than yesterday. Actually, the longest was 4 km, and four tunnels had 2 km long. There was very cold like running through ice hole and watery in the tunnels. Luckyly I didn't freez because of I entered with rain gear. When you will go through here, it is better that you wear a rain gear or a windbreaker even if it's sunny,
I'm usually listening to music in cycling. For this touring I brought a speaker hybrid light found on Amazon. However, it was claimed to be waterproof, but it broke today when I rode in the rain. It's the "made in China". The switch didn't respond and the light stayed on. I had no choice, so I had to take off the lid when I turned off the light, and close it when I turned on the light. Moreover the speaker didn't produce any sound. Finally this NEW gear became just a big heavy dusty light...
Speaking of "made in China", the 10000mA mobile battery I brought is also not functioned now... I couldn't charge it with the solar panel. So I tried connecting another spare 5000mA battery to the panel and it was OK. Moreover, this 10000mA Chinese battery could not be charged even from the outlet now. I'll find an electronics store on the way and buy a "Japanese" mobile battery...
I found a series of waterfalls that are about 50m wide along the road called Humbe's Waterfall. The water was very cold and felt good to wash my face. Then I drew water from the water bottle for drinking water. I heard later, don't drink the raw water because there are echinococcus derived from foxes. Oops, I have already drunk a sip. I'm sure I was told not to drink raw water since I was young...

I was closed to Lake Toyoni which is famous for its heart-shaped shape as the picture. However there is 9km far in the mountains from the main road I'm going, so I decided not to go this time.
I bought some food at a supermarket near Hiromi town. I wasn't sure if I should get a meal here or not, but I decided to eat after I had gone a bit further. However, there was no town after here, and I ate a few bananas until I arrived at the accommodation for tonight.
Before the today's destination, Mansei hot spring, I arrived by "The Naumann Elephant Excavation" where sounds great ! Unfortunately, it was pretty shabby, and I wondered if it was worth it to climb down the hill...
I arrived at Bansei Onsen at 4 pm.. I can camp here for free if I take a bath for 500 jpy. It was a beautiful site with beautiful grass, but the wind was blowing down from the sea and it was very windy. The locals said it was unusually cold today, but it was certainly enough that I needed to wear down jackets when the sun went down. In the bath, I talked for a long time with local fishermen, motorbike tourists, car tourists, and many other people.
There is a coin laundry and a rest room with WiFi connection but no cell phone signal in the hot spring, I managed my photos and videos using Macbook in the rest room. I wonder how these YouTubers who are filming and touring, edit and upload their photos and videos? At the moment, I don't even have time to look back at what I shot...(I'm writing this article a whopping three years later...)
For dinner, I cooked stir-fried vegetables and salmon belly in soy sauce. However, when I baked them on the alcohol stove, they didn't cook well, so next time I decided to cook them in a saucepan. I also cooked Hokuren rice from Hokkaido today, and it was delicious I never know when I come here ! The canned chuhai is a Hokkaido exclusive: apple cheeks, Yubari melon and grapes. Well, they're like soft drinks.
I use roughly 500ml of fuel alcohol for cooking in three days. That means my fuel bill is about 65 jpy/day. Is this expensive or not? In calculating a month would be about 2,000 jpy, but if people lives on city gas and cook for themself, is that about the same? I ate my meal while thinking about things that I couldn't choke on...
In the meantime, a 70 year old camper came and told me all about his travels. He told me that he used to climb mountains and camp when he was young, but now he travels all over Japan in his camper-van. I talk to many campers who are not cyclists. Usually they think it is impossible for them to travel by bicycle because it takes a lot of energy. However most of the cyclists I met so far were over 60 years old. If people actually do it, they'll find that they don't need much stamina (just ride a distance that suits them)... It's a good example of how human beings, if we make an impression that we don't know anything, our possibilities will become more and more limited and our lives will be uninteresting.
While I was cleaning up after the meal, a fox came to the campground. It's a shame he was gone before I had time to take a picture. I went to bed at 10:00 again today. It is just a Healthy life I like.
