Hokkaido Touring Day 15: Heading South

English | 日本語
I got up and went to the bathroom once in the midnight because slept with over drinking. Then I woke up at 4:00 AM and I wrote yesterday's diary . I had breakfast with bread, coffee and a banana. Today I'm planning to leave early in the morning to go around Cape Noshappu and recharge my battery for a while at a internet cafe. I couldn't charge the battery with the solar panel much because it was cloudy yesterday, the battery of the MacBook and the smart phone are both left only at about 20%. I feel that the solar panels is less usable than I expected because they are dependent on the weather and riding direction....
I left at 6:30 AM and headed for Cape Noshappu first. It was about 4km one way, and I couldn't see anything special there. There were a lot of places to eat, such as a seafood bowl, so it would have been nice to have had a meal here last night. I took a souvenir photo and headed for scheduled route, but I'm worried about a headwind today. Yes, I have been heading north, but from today I'll be heading south.
I found a young cyclist ahead of me in Wakkanai City. I caught up with him at a traffic light and talked with him. He was a sophomore in high school and was on a bicycle trip from Hakodate to Cape Soya. He told me that he would be done after seeing Cape Soya today. His dad is same about my age, so I suggested that you should invite him on a bike trip, the age is not related to try new things. The internet cafe in the city I was aiming to recharge the battery wasn't open in the morning.
Leaving Wakkanai, I took a mountain road in a straight line. A headwind made my speed slow and my breath caught . On the way, I decided to head to Sarobetsu wilderness at the branch. The wind was still headwind, but the ups and downs became less and less. After a while, I took a course towards Panke marsh, and continued on through the wilderness. Finally I took a break and some photos at Panke marsh, and then headed to Nakagawacho where my destination today.
Young girls from the car cheered me on, "Good luck!", as I was getting knackered from the double punch of the headwind and the rising temperatures caused by the clear skies. I immediately feel better, but the effect was lost when I couldn't see the car anymore. Complaining about the sun and the wind (I'm actually talking to myself), I managed to get to today's destination, the Nakagawacho forest park campground. Just before that, I went to the supermarket to pick up some drinks and food for tonight.
This campground is a large, beautiful park with manicured lawns and even a lodge made of trees and most importantly it's free ! This place is also great. Hokkaido is really blessed with camping sites. When I talked to the preceding guests there, they said there was still room at the lodge, so I decided to stay in the lodge. The place to sleep was laid out on tatami mats, and I secured a place to sleep with a camping mat and a sleeping bag. After washing and resting, I headed to a nearby hot spring (400 jpy). Since the water was chlorine-disinfected and reheated, it was not so much like a hot spring, but the effect was said to be solid. I could be refreshed well.
While chatting with roommates, I cooked and ate my meal. Today I had masala curry and a special mixed with minced shrimp, burdock and fried mushrooms, and a cucumber and Tomato salad. The plums I bought for dessert were big and sweet and delicious! There's not much fuel and rice left.
The lodge had power and I can charge all the electronics I was worried about. Thank goodness. A person who has come to stay for a long time every year recommended to me to stay one more nights, because tomorrow is a festival and there will be a fireworks and mochi-maki (rice cake throwing). Here is so quiet and nice, and I'm thinking about staying the first night in a row for this touring trip. Bedtime is before 9:00 PM because I was tired.
