Hokkaido Touring Day 18: Mysterious Blue Pond

English | 日本語
I get up at 4 AM to go to the bathroom and it's raining outside. According to the weather forecast, it's supposed to rise in the morning, so I decid to leave a little later and went to bed until 6 AM. I had ramen for breakfast today too. I waited for the rain to subside while drying my tent and other items in the pavilion, and left at 9 AM.
I haven't decided what my route will be today. I will decide to see how things went. The rain had managed to stop, but the road surface was still wet and I couldn't use a clothesline state bike to run as usual. I rode about 20 km to Hibu Town. I stopped at Seicomart to buy a iced plastic bottle, canned coffee and sweet bread, and then took a break at eat-in corner. I dumped the yesterday's trash and headed out. Camping and garbage disposal is always a problem, but this is usually the pattern. The roads are now dry, so I put away my rain gear and attach the laundry to the trailer.
After another 25 km, I arrived at a 7-Eleven in Higashi Asahikawa. I had some leftover rice for lunch, so I bought some tea. As I didn't seem to have time to go around the Shikisai-no-oka (four-season hill), I decided to stop at Aoi Ike (blue pond) only.
I stopped to the Turuha Drug Store in Biei to buy food and alcohol for dinner tonight. I found a sparkling wine (mostly beer) called Barreal was inexpensive at 78 yen and had a 4% alcohol content in Top Value supermarket. It's just right. I will drink this from next time. I have a lot of veggies left over, so I decided to use them for curry. I bought licorice tea herbal medicine as my chest sometimes gets heavy .
On the way to Blue Pond, I approached the Biei River and took some photos. I found a cycling path along the riverbank and looked closely at it to be shown the distance to Blue Pond and Shirogane Hot Springs . I took a ride along the bike path, which I thought was lucky. It's not so close to the river, but it's a nice road. But it's not easy to get up to speed and it's tiring. First I thought it was a headwind, but it was actually a much gentler climb.
I thought the cycling road would continue to the Blue Pond, but it ended about 3km before. It was only when I started riding up the national road that I realized the climb I had just made. It was quite an exhausting climb all the way to Blue Pond and Shirogane Hot Springs. The Blue Pond was very mysterious and beautiful. I hope it's a good shot I took.
The campsite I finally arrived at after a tighter climb from the Blue Pond was nice and spacious. But the bees were a bit noisy. Lodging costs were 400 jpy. I pitched my tent, washed my clothes, and went to the hot spring. The hot spring was not a stopover at a nearby hotel, but a national health resort affiliated with the Kokusetsu-Shirakane Onsen Campground (200 jpy). It's about 500m from the campground, but there didn't seem to be many people there, so I enjoyed the hot spring only by myself. Doing bicycle touring and camping, I can stay night and get hot spring only 600 jpy. I can't do anymore for staying usual hotels.
The dinner is a vegetable curry tonight. It goes well with this sparkling wine. I'll save some rice for tomorrow again. I'm planning to go sightseeing in Furano tomorrow, and there are various trekking courses in this neighborhood. I'd like to stay here for a couple of nights, but I'll have to wait until another time, considering my schedule.
I was reading a book and bedtime is 11 PM. I hope the weather will be fine tomorrow. I have a pimple on the back of my hand. I'm allergic to the sun light (UV). My glove is mesh and I get sunburned in this area too. I'll put sunscreen on it from tomorrow. I think the next glove I buy should not be mesh.

From Mikasa Mt. Natural Park to National Shirogane Campground 85km
